Alumni Spotlight: Johnny E. Bates, M.D.
Johnny E. Bates, M.D., a graduate of the Department of Mathematics, is a physician and the CEO and owner of Quality Correctional Health Care, Inc., which provides health care services in correctional settings.
Bhambhvani, a psychiatry and School of Medicine student, will receive funding to pursue a biological science graduate degree at the University of Cambridge if selected.

Keeping the Magic Alive
Alumna Debbie Jo Severin remembers her days as a UAB undergraduate student as extraordinary. Her time here was instrumental in molding many traditions for future Blazers, and she continues to invest in the future of UAB students.

Better Brain Training for an Aging World
Jarrod M. Hicks is looking for a smarter way to sharpen aging minds. Combining algorithms and brain scans, this senior math and neuroscience major in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences is trying to understand how cognitive training strengthens neural networks.

Mathematics’ Vaughan Leads Honorees for Service Awards Recognition
Loy O. Vaughan, Ph.D., has educated thousands of students across all disciplines in mathematics during his 45 years at UAB. He will join more than 250 employees at UAB to be honored during the annual Service Awards Program noon Friday, Feb. 20.

New books by CAS faculty include Beyond Sound, The College and Career Guide in Music Technology by Scott Phillips, Ph.D., assistant professor of music, and Beginning Partial Differential Equations by Peter O’Neil, professor emeritus in the Mathematics department.
Graduate Mathematics student Nichole Pompey won first place for a presentation during the 2014 Emerging Researchers National Conference in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

CAS Students Place at 2014 Graduate Student Research Days
Two advanced students in The College, Nicole Watkins in History and Kyle Besing in Mathematics, won second and first place, respectively, in this year’s Graduate Student Research Days, hosted by UAB Graduate School.
The upcoming Interdisciplinary Innovation Forum explores Mathematical Biology and features four speakers who will highlight advances in the field, which could determine the future of medicine for generations.
