The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences offers faculty a range of awards and grant opportunities to advance their research and scholarship and recognize their achievements.

Michele “Mike” Wilson, Ph.D., was an award-winning faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Sociology and launched the Women’s Studies Program.

Each academic year, the UAB College of Arts and Sciences receives departmental nominations for the Dean’s Awards for Outstanding Undergraduate Students and Outstanding Graduate Students.

In 1997, Leigh Willis, Ph.D., a rising senior studying sociology at Albion College in Albion, Michigan, encountered a life-changing document. It was an interest form about a graduate program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Michele “Mike” Wilson passed away May 30, 2021. She retired as associate professor of sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2008) and continued working for the university for several years afterwards.

When Battalion Chief Tobias Jones was collecting information for a Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) strategic planning project, he thought of the UAB Department of Sociology.

Friends, family, colleagues, and admirers of Dr. Michele “Mike” Wilson and Professor Becky Trigg have made generous gifts to create an endowed award in the Department of Sociology.

The Department of Sociology recognizes our 2018 honors award recipients.

Dr. Magdalena Szaflarski has written the cover story in the December issue of HIV Specialist.

Sociology graduate students Jalal Uddin and Haley Kendrick have been awarded best graduate student paper and honorable mention.

This fall, we welcomed several new faculty members, a new chair for the Department of Sociology, and three interim chairs. We are proud to have all of them in leadership and academic positions and are excited to see what they accomplish at UAB.

Dr. Verna Keith has been named the new chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Sociology.
Social and Behavioral Science for Health Professionals, written by Department of Sociology alumni Brian P. Hinote and Jason Adam Wasserman, has been published by Rowman & Littlefield. The book examines various social and behavioral factors that affect health and illness, with a particular focus on how these phenomena inform clinical practice. Social Skills

Here in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Sociology is focused on providing our undergraduate and graduate students with the skills they need in their careers as well as in graduate and professional schools.
Julie Locher, Ph.D., director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Translational Nutrition and Aging Program, received the Gerontological Society of America 2016 M. Powell Lawton Award for her contributions in gerontology research.
Dr. Akilah Dulin Keita, who received her Ph.D. In Medical Sociology from UAB in 2007, has been named the Manning Assistant Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences in the Brown University School of Public Health.
