Department of Social Work Assistant Professor Scott Batey said the support of this and similar events is important because community involvement is central to the social work profession and to the personal lives of many practicing social workers.

"As a profession, we advocate for social justice, in this case inclusive of access to medications and care for all individuals living with HIV, battling health disparities as they are manifested in HIV, calling attention to the need for continued focus on research and prevention, and celebrating the lives of those we've lost and the work that continues through organizations such as Birmingham AIDS Outreach," said Batey.

Sarah Simpson, a friend of the department who ran as part of the department's team, won the women's division in the 5K run and donated the medal to the department.
