All applicants must meet admissions requirements established by the UAB Graduate School; including completion of a Bachelor's degree (or higher), and minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a four-point scale) in junior and senior level course work.

  • This is a traditional program. There are currently no online or evening classes being offered. Classes are offered during the day. Employed students should make arrangements with the place of employment.

Chat MSW Program Director is a first-come-first serve walk-in session and no appointments required.

An admissions packet will consist of:

  • Academic transcripts with GPAs (note: please have transcripts mailed directly to the UAB Graduate School — transcripts will not be accepted in the Department)
  • Two recommendations, including one academic and one professional (note: please ask individuals to attach formal letters of recommendation to the Graduate School application — recommendation letters will not be accepted in the Department)
  • A professional resume
  • A writing sample answering two specific questions around professionalism, ethics, diversity, and social justice
  • International students will be required to submit scores from the TOEFL
  • The GRE is not required

Application and Admissions Process

The steps below provide a general guideline of the MSW Program application and admissions process:

  • The application review process begins in November.
  • All admissions decisions will be communicated via email by the UAB Graduate School approximately to 60 days after submission.
  • Applications submitted by April 1 will receive prioritized field placement.
  • The final application deadline is July 15th.

Advanced Standing

Students who hold a bachelor of Social Work degree from a BSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) may be admitted to the MSW program with advanced-standing status. The required coursework are completed over three semesters (Fall/Spring/Fall).
