Assistant Professor

The Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for an Assistant Professor with a start date of August 2020. We seek a candidate with demonstrated scholarship in any area within medical sociology. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Sociology or related field, a record of strong independent research, experience with or potential for obtaining external funding, and a strong commitment to quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The department offers a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology and a B.S. and Ph.D. in Medical Sociology. Research in the department focuses on Medical Sociology and health-related topics. Currently, the department has about 75 undergraduate majors, 25 Ph.D. students, 75 professional master’s students, and 11 full-time faculty members with anticipated growth in the next few years. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching is prominent, and the Department of Sociology collaborates closely with multiple units across campus. For example, our current faculty members participate in several interdisciplinary research centers on campus including the Nutrition Obesity Research Center, the Minority Health Disparities Research Center, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.

With over 21,000 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 15 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state.
