Inspired-Teaching-USITT Our own Associate Professor Cliff Simon is one of a favored few whose essays appear in Inspired Teaching, a collection of essays and articles from USITT, written by some of the most highly-respected educators in the field of theatre design & technology. It will come as no surprise to you that such a list had to include Cliff!
Alliance Theatre's production of the rock musical Next to Normal is now running, thanks to dramaturgical help from Theatre Department Assistant Professor Vessela Warner.  The multiple-award-winning play will run through November 11 at Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center.  Next to Normal concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. The Broadway production was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three (Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley). The script received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor.

Dustin Fresh from his success in assistant-directing R.U.R. off-Broadway, department alumnus Dustin Cañez is stage-managing Opera Birmingham's production of The Magic Flute.  This production of the opera will be sung in German, so we imagine the managements of the show presents some unique challenges ... Meanwhile, Dustin continues to be the general factotum for the multimedia phenomenon The Amandas ...
