The Phase I Clinical Trials Unit is a program dedicated to providing leadership and support for the conduct of early phase, including first-in-human, clinical trials, and will serve cancer patients and referring physicians throughout the state of Alabama and beyond.
It is the Program's hope that patients with cancer, for whom conventional therapeutic options no longer provide benefit, will come to the Phase I Unit as an option in their continuum of care.
For clinical investigators, the Unit will be the epicenter of a competitive clinical and translational drug development program at UAB, providing all necessary resources for the conduct of Phase I Clinical Trials, including:
- Regulatory/Finance
- Study Oversight
- Patient Recruitment & Enrollment
- Standard of Care Treatment
- Administration of Investigational Study Agent
- Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Surrogate Marker Studies
- Research Coordination & Data Management
- Billing Compliance, Accounts Receivable, Funds Disbursement

Location
The Phase I Clinical Trials Unit is located on the East Wing of Jefferson Tower, 15th floor, adjacent to the existing Clinical Research Unit and the sample processing facility. It is comprised of five exam rooms for the administration of novel research agents. Each room has the flexibility to be used as private or semi-private to allow for maximum space utilization and appropriate participant monitoring.
