Dear Clinical Trial Investigator Community,

In light of recent questions that have been posed and because information is constantly evolving during this time, this correspondence aims to provide specific clarification for Principal Investigators and their teams about conducting clinical trials at UAB. The information below is meant to amplify the guidance that has been coming from the UAB Office of Research (found here).

  • Only trial visits deemed essential for the participant’s health and well-being should take place at this time. Any other visits should be conducted in a ‘remote’ manner in coordination with the Sponsor. The ‘integrity of the study data’ is not rationale for deeming a visit ‘essential’.

  • All essential in-person visits shall include pre-screening activities with the participant at all visits to ensure appropriate safety measures for the sake of the participant and researchers. Additional information about these measures can be found here.

  • Any visit that is not essential to the participant’s health and cannot be conducted remotely for data gathering purposes should be delayeduntil a later date deemed safe by institutional leadership.

  • All monitoring and site initiation visits are to be conducted remotely. As discussed in recent communications from IT, all Zoom calls should be password-protected.

  • A number of FAQs have been developed by the UAB IRB and these should be reviewed to ensure understanding of reporting requirements.

  • Guidance from the FDA on conducting clinical trials during the pandemic can be found on their site here.
