Voucher Programs

Purpose: The mission of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) is to address disparities and diseases disproportionately represented within the Deep South as we accelerate discovery to improve human health. Vouchers help overcome barriers to conducting mission-aligned investigation by connecting investigators with clinical, translational or community-based research goals to the facilities, resources and expertise they need. Vouchers are intended for active research efforts that are ready to use these resources immediately.

Eligibility: This program invites applications from faculty with full-time appointments who are actively engaged in research at any one of the 11 CCTS Partner Institutions. Applications will also be accepted from community partners or trainees (pre-/post-doctoral researchers, clinical residents/fellows) representing a scientific team – these individuals will be prompted to specify a full-time faculty lead/mentor as Principal Investigator of the voucher.

Investigators are eligible for one award per year. Research must be completed in the United States. Current CCTS KL2, TL1 or Pilot awardees are not eligible. Priority will be given to new investigators not previously awarded a voucher and early stage investigators.

Award Period: The award period is four months – investigators have 60 days to initiate use, 30 days to use and 30 days to invoice. Longer award periods may be requested with justification in the application and approval by the review committee. However, request for carryover retrospective of award is not allowable.

Budget: The maximum allowable budget is $5,000 (direct).

  • Travel expenses (for travel expenses related to Career Development activities, please see Mini-Sabbaticals)
  • Equipment
  • Lab Supplies
  • REDCap hosting or maintenance fees
  • Patient Stipends
  • Sequencing (WGS, RNAseq, Exome, Microbiome, Bisulfite, etc) – the maximum Voucher award amount does not cover the cost of these services
  • Investigator(s) salary/fringe
  • Indirect / F&A costs
  • NIH support cannot be used to subsidize industry-sponsored work

Regulatory Approval: All lines of investigation supported by the CCTS Research Voucher Program require appropriate regulatory approvals (IRB, IACUC, as applicable) at the time of application and must be in good standing at the time of award and throughout study implementation.

Application Submission: CCTS accepts research voucher applications on a rolling basis. Applications may be submitted by completing the CCTS Voucher Application Form.

Review: Applications are reviewed by the CCTS Voucher Review Committee on a rolling basis for scientific merit, mission alignment, and appropriateness of the budget and justification of need. Applicants will receive requests for additional information and/or a decision by email within two weeks of application.

Reporting: Awardees are expected to respond to CCTS evaluation requests and/or surveys for up to five years after awards are made. Such requests will collect award outcomes information (publications, grants, new IRB protocols, patents, clinical interventions (therapeutic/diagnostic/medical), behavioral/community interventions, changes in access to care, changes to standards of care, changes in health policy, collaborations, related accomplishments and/or conditional responses.
