About the Program

*NOTE: UAB now offers a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology, and PhD in Medical/Clinical Psychology and is in the process of discontinuing the PhD in Psychology. These new programs are accepting students for Fall 2024. To request information, please use the contact form on this page by choosing "Psychology (PhD)" as the program of choice.

You have a solid grasp of how the mind works but want to know even more about what makes people tick. With a doctorate in psychology, you can offer great value in fields such as mental health counseling, business, advertising, politics, law, education, and more.

To prepare you for these careers—and equip you to peer inside a person's noggin—we need to make sure you're well versed in the core areas of psychology, as well as a chosen concentration. Take the behavioral neuroscience concentration, for example. Our goal will be to prepare you for research, teach you the neurobiology of behavior, and make you an expert in behavioral science and neuroscience. With lifespan developmental psychology, on the other hand, you'll focus on human development from conception into old age. We want this concentration to prepare you for clinical, teaching, or research positions. Finally, if you do the medical/clinical psychology concentration, we want to train you to become a leader in health promotion, disease prevention, risk reduction, symptom assessments, and amelioration in interdisciplinary and medical settings. Under the supervision of our faculty, our students conduct research, become published, participate in conferences, become active in scientific and professional organizations, teach, and provide professional service as appropriate. As you earn your PhD, you'll also complete coursework for the MS in Psychology.
