UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day, held each fall, brings together over 500 volunteers for an exciting charitable event. Working alongside community volunteers, UAB Dentistry faculty, staff, students and graduates give their time to make free dental care available to hundreds of low and no-income adults from Birmingham-area shelters and other local agencies.
For one day each year, Community Day volunteers provide urgent dental care along with extensive entry and exit oral health care counseling. A high priority is given to patients suffering from dental infections or pain. On-site wellness activities, including blood pressure checks and oral cancer screenings, are also offered to patients during the event. Local dentists pitch in to support the event, volunteering on Community Day and assisting with limited follow-up treatment, as needed.
In 2014, the second annual UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day saw the event grow to include four additional clinic sites around the Birmingham area. UAB School of Dentistry served as the primary site, while Christ Health Center, The Foundry and Jefferson County Health Department dental clinics offered their facilities as an extension of the event.
With the help of generous sponsor and community support, UAB Dentistry is, proudly, one of the first dental schools in the country to host this type of benevolent event. Click here to view a four-minute video of this special day.
We welcome volunteers from the dental profession, as well as community volunteers with no dental experience who serve important supportive roles. You can volunteer with us for a full- or a half-day shift, as your schedule permits. Click here if you have questions about UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day.
