School of Dentistry faculty, students, and staff spend hundreds of hours each year conducting oral health screenings, educating community members on oral health, and offering dental care here in Alabama and abroad. Our robust community outreach takes shape through involvement with community organizations, local activities, and hosting events.

Our volunteers are engaged with countless partnering organizations throughout the community including Cahaba Valley Healthcare, a non-profit organization that targets the healthcare needs of Central Alabama’s Hispanic and low-income community, and First Light Shelter, a non-profit that provides a safe place for homeless women and children in the Birmingham area. Other partners include United Way of West Alabama Success by 6, United Cerebral Palsy, Alabama’s Kid Check and Sight Savers of America, Equal Access Birmingham, Special Olympics and Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.

Volunteers also participate in events like Project Homeless Connect that helps homeless people access needed services and provided ways to break the homelessness cycle. The event links homeless people to housing, dental and medical care, and other community services.

Student-Led Outreach

Lessons in a Lunchbox is one of many student-based annual outreach activities. Implemented in Alabama in 2012 by UAB’s Student National Dental Association (SNDA) chapter, dental students work with the Children’s Oral Health Institute in Maryland to education children at Glen Iris Elementary school about basic oral hygiene and the importance of brushing. The students provide each child with a lunchbox containing a toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste.

“UAB Dentistry Cares” Community Day

Each fall, the school teams up with alumni, sponsors, and partner organizations to host “UAB Dentistry Cares” Community Day, our signature charitable event to improve access to care right here in Birmingham.

Alongside event sponsors, UAB Dentistry volunteers provide basic dental care to hundreds of homeless and underserved patients in urgent need.

In addition to free dental care to patients who have difficulty accessing critical dental services - patients who are primarily connected to us through local agencies and shelters - patients receive oral health counseling, blood pressure checks, and oral cancer screenings. All told, several hundred dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and others give up a day of work to help their neighbors in need.

Through generous sponsor and community support, the UAB School of Dentistry is among very few dental schools the country to host this type of benevolent event. Challenging dental professionals to work together to improve the oral health of the citizens of Alabama, the annual charitable event helps raise awareness of the difficulty that low-income adults face in accessing critic al dental service - a mission we are passionate about.

Give Kids A Smile® – A Partnership with TeamSmile

Each spring, our Department of Pediatric Dentistry hosts Give Kids A Smile® (GKAS). Event volunteers provide free, accessible dental care to dozens of qualifying local children in need.

The event raises awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease, while also enabling those who may not otherwise receive regular dental care the dental attention they needed. Patients, ranging in ages from 4-17, receive dental services such as dental education, diagnoses and treatment planning, emergency care, and cleanings. More than 40 volunteers assist in the charitable event.

GKAS was launched nationally by the American Dental Association Foundation in 2003. TeamSmile will join UAB for the 2020 event.
