The following are required for ALL teaching fields in the Alternative Master's Program (AMP):

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher (unrounded) on the degree-issuing undergraduate transcript (or 3.0 on a graduate transcript) from a regionally accredited college.
  • Attend information session (Register Now)
  • Read AMP information packet
  • Complete criminal background clearance (Read More)
  • Passing score on all three parts of the ETS Core Academic Skills test. (Register Now)
  • Passing score on Praxis Subject test(s) (formerly Praxis II) in projected teaching field
    Test codes and passing scores: Visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/al/al_teacher_ed/. Scroll down to Tests required for specific certification areas; click on grade level (e.g., Secondary) and teaching field (e.g., Math). Because of periodic changes in codes and scores, you must visit this website before registering to take a test to confirm requirements on your testing date.

  • Complete your application for admission to the UAB Graduate School.
  • Respond promptly to all emails received from UAB and follow through with instructions (e.g., confirming an admissions interview).

Arts Education

Elementary Education

Elementary Education: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must have an undergraduate major AND the following required courses (can be taken first semester of AMP): Child Development and Family Relations.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language: To be considered for admission to the ESL program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the ESL AMP must have an undergraduate major in a language OR 32 credit hours in a language of which 19 are upper division OR a passing score on ESOL Praxis #5361. NOTE: Candidates must also have 8 credit hours of a foreign language.

French and English as a Second Language: To be considered for admission to the French and ESL program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the French and ESL program must meet admission requirements for both ESL and French.

Spanish and English as a Second Language: To be considered for admission to the Spanish and ESL program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the Spanish and ESL program must meet admission requirements for both ESL and Spanish.

Kinesiology

Physical Education: To be considered for admission to the PE program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Secondary Education

Biology: To be considered for admission to the biology program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to th biology program ust have an undergraduate major in a related field.

Chemistry: To be considered for admission to the chemistry program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the chemistry program must have an undergraduate major in a related field.

English Language Arts: To be considered for admission to the English language arts program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the English language arts program must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND 1 course at 300+ level in each of these areas (required - taken before or during AMP): Shakespeare (EH 376/476/576), grammar (EH452/552), young adult literature (EDR441/541, EH419), multicultural literature (EH 365, 366, 492/592), and writing (EH 402/502, 404/504, 433/533). One course at any level in each of following: Speech, Journalism, and Theater.

General Science: To be considered for admission to the general science program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the general science program must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND at least one course (recommended) in biology, chemistry, physics, and either earth science or space science.

General Social Science: To be considered for admission to the general social science program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the general social science program must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND 2+ courses before AMP (required): US History I, US Hist II, World Hist I (or Western Civ I) & World Hist II (or Western Civ II), with other 2 in AMP. Also required: one course in each of these areas: economics, government, and geography.

History: To be considered for admission to the history program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the history program must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND US Hist I, US Hist II, World Hist I (or Western Civ I) and World Hist II (or Western Civ II) – at least 2 before AMP.

Mathematics: To be considered for admission to the mathematics program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the mathematics AMP must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND the following prerequisites (preferably in the recent past): calculus I (MA 125), calculus II (MA 126), & calculus III (MA 227) .

Physics: To be considered for admission to the physics program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the physics AMP must have an undergraduate major in a related field.

Special Education

Applicants to the collaborative teacher AMP must have an undergraduate major and the following required courses: Child Development and Family Relations.

Applicants to the early childhood special education AMP must have an undergraduate major and the following required courses (can be taken first semester of AMP): Child Development and Family Relations

Visual Impairments: To be considered for admission to the visual impairments program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements listed above on this webpage (2.75 GPA, Music Praxis, ETS Core Skills test, background clearance) and also attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the visual impairments AMP must also have an undergraduate major in an academic teaching field OR 32 semester credit hours in an academic teaching field (e.g., biology, English, history, math, etc.) including at least 19 semester hours of upper division coursework.

World Languages

Applicants to the French AMP must also have an undergraduate major AND 67% writing and 75% speaking on respective Praxis OR score of Low Advanced on Oral Proficiency Interview computerized (OPI-c) during Spanish first term at UAB.
