The UAB School of Education will host a GEAR UP Alabama informational and open house Wednesday, Sept. 20.

The campus community is invited to learn more about GEAR UP Alabama. The UAB School of Education will host a GEAR UP Alabama informational and open house Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Education Building. The informational will take place from 1-2 p.m in EB 146. The open house will follow, from 2-4 p.m in EB 126.

GEAR UP AlabamaGaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a seven-year $49 million grant awarded to the UAB School of Education by the U.S. Department of Education’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Now in its fourth year, the program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education by providing direct and support services to high-poverty, middle and high schools. GEAR UP Alabama serves a cohort of 9,981 ninth and tenth-grade students in the Black Belt. Associate Professor Tonya Perry, Ph.D., is the principal investigator for the grant.

Anyone with an interest in working with students in the Black Belt region, specifically in the areas of academic enrichment, comprehensive mentoring, career counseling, advising, tutoring, test prep, and parental engagement, is encouraged to attend.
