Who should complete this course?

Are you a UAB Employee mailing shipments refrigerated with Carbon Dioxide (Dry Ice)? If so, per the Hazardous Materials regulation, it is required to complete this training course every two years (or if regulations change. Failure to properly pack and ship materials is a violation of the law and is punishable with fines or imprisonment. Further training may be required, depending on the samples or materials being shipped with Dry Ice. A copy of the completed training certificate must be maintained in the laboratory files and presented to the proper authorities upon request.

Any UAB employee shipping, handling, or offering for transport samples considered Biological Substances, Category B Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), Exempt Human or Animals Specimens (EPS)must complete training every two years or if regulations change. This a Federal requirement per the Hazardous Materials Regulations.

Who should complete this course?

If you are responsible for generating, handling, or signing for the removal of medical waste at UAB, it is required you complete this training course every three years (or if regulations change). The focus of this course is on medical waste generated or handled in research labs or areas. This course meets the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) training requirements for anyone offering medical waste to a contractor for transport from UAB facilities. A copy of the completed training certificate must be maintained in the laboratory files and presented to the proper authorities upon request.

Who should complete this course?

Are you responsible for generating, handling, packing, or electronically signing a manifest requesting hazardous waste for pickup and disposal? If so, it is required to complete this training course annually. This training only covers hazardous waste policies and procedures. If you handle any other types of waste, it may require other training. A copy of the completed training certificate must be maintained in the laboratory files and presented to the proper authorities upon request.

This course is required for those who must handle, store, pack and/or manifest universal waste. Universal waste includes materials such as some types of batteries, fluorescent lights, and light bulbs.

The Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) course is online and is required annually if you handle oil products.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) closely monitors what is and is not allowed into the sewers and surface waters. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates this activity in an oversight role. Therefore, any UAB employee working with oil is required to complete training on Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC).
