Instructional design services are provided by the innovative learning design team, which includes experienced instructional designers and technologists who receive ongoing training in the design, development, and delivery of online courses and the use of online educational tools in the traditional classroom. The team can work closely with a school's instructional design staff to help augment existing services and/or can work directly with faculty. The Innovative Learning Design Team can provide complete course development and delivery services or provide assistance in specific areas of the process. Instructional design services are available for both academic and professional studies courses. For more information about this service, contact Samira Laouzai, Deputy Director and Manager of eLearning Services and Quality Assurance, at or by calling 205-975-2961.

How Courses are Developed

During this kick-off meeting, your assigned innovative learning designer will go through the course goals and objectives, delivery format, services, and potential pedagogical, media, and instructional technology solutions. A timeline and training plan are developed during this meeting.

During this step, your innovative learning designer will work with you to build your course. They will help you manage your content develop by providing weekly content delivery deadlines and will help you build the course within Canvas. Any media or technology outline in the course plan will also be developed and implemented into the course.

Once the course is complete, it will be reviewed by the innovative learning design team. You will also have an opportunity to carefully check through the course. Any revisions identified will be made during this time.

The course is launched once it has been approved and you are provided with instructions on how to publish the course at the appropriate time.

Once the course has been taught, your innovative learning designer will help you evaluate its success based on student and faculty evaluations. This allows for continual improvement.

Following the development of your course, your innovative learning designer can help submit the course for a Quality Matters (QM) peer review. QM is a faculty-centered peer review process that helps us maintain high standards for our online courses.
