Course Description: Understanding the components of quality online education is a critical first step toward developing a quality online or hybrid course. In this course, participants will be introduced to the Quality Matters standards, and learn how integrating Universal Design Principles in their courses can help design content that meets the needs of a variety of learners. Participants will be introduced to the eLearning course design process and begin the course design/redesign process by creating measurable course-level learning objectives. To gain the most benefit from this course, participants are encouraged to focus on an individual course and to bring materials such as a syllabus if possible.

  1. Explain the need for UDL and how UDL addresses accessibility
  2. Recognize the components of the QM rubric in an online course
  3. Identify the components of the course design process
  4. Define alignment
  5. Evaluate a sample course plan for alignment among learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments

Course Description: Understanding the components of quality online education is a critical first step toward developing a quality online or hybrid course. In this course, participants continue to learn about the Quality Matters standards and incorporate Universal Design Principles in planning assessments for their course module(s) that align with course and module objectives. They will also discuss using appropriate tools to assist in assessing learning. To gain the most benefit from this course, participants are encouraged to focus on an individual course and to bring materials such as a syllabus or course plan from previous workshop if possible.

  1. Identify the QM standards for creating assessments that align with the course and module(s) learning objectives
  2. Use a course design plan for assessing student learning that align with the course and modules learning objectives, and employ Universal Design Principles
  3. Select appropriate tools for assessing learning in online or hybrid courses that provide test security

Course Description: Understanding the components of quality online education is a critical first step toward developing a quality online or hybrid course. In this course, participants continue to learn about the Quality Matters standards, and incorporate Universal Design Principles to select/create instructional materials that align with course objectives, module objectives, and assessments. Participants will also learn about copyright and intellectual property issues that arise in creating and using instructional materials. To gain the most benefit from this course, participants are encouraged to focus on an individual course and to bring materials such as a syllabus or course plan from previous workshop if possible.

Participants will select appropriate learning activities that align with course and module learning objectives.

Course 6: Tips for Successful Online Course Delivery

Duration: Three (3) hours

Course Description: This workshop covers the additional skills required for the successful delivery of online content. In this workshop, participants will discuss faculty and students misconceptions around online teaching and learning and the challenges of online content delivery. Participants will also learn about the impact of the following: good course planning, components of an online course syllabus, and the importance of building online communities for students’ success. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn about the various resources and support services available through UAB.
