1. Boosting Engagement with NBC Learn

Course Description:

NBC Learn Higher Ed (highered.nbclearn.com) is a collection of more than 21,000 videos, documents, and images that can be incorporated into classroom lectures and online modules. The stories on NBC Learn Higher Ed are 2-6 minutes in length and designed so that faculty can give students access to digital content that is engaging, inspiring, and relevant to their daily lives.

Participants in this session will learn to search, download, and embed videos into Canvas and hear best practices from professors currently using the resource.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the benefits of using media to support instruction
  2. Access NBC Learn in Canvas and locate videos that align with course or module objectives
  3. Identify best practices in incorporating media content in online or hybrid courses
  4. Locate additional resources available to instructors through NBC Learn

2. Canvas Automated Alerts

Course Description:

Inside BlazerNet, faculty have the option to setup automatic alerts for their Canvas course. These alerts email students who have not logged into Canvas within a specified time frame.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify students who have not logged into Canvas within a specified time frame
  2. Create an automatic alert inside BlazerNet
  3. Locate responses from students to automatic alerts

3. Canvas-Banner Grade Publishing

Course Description:

At the end of each semester, grades inside Canvas can be automatically published to BlazerNet. Following a few quick steps, numerical grades can be converted and processed inside Banner. Setting up a grading scheme and weighting grades are couple of the steps that will be covered in this training.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Setup a grading scheme
  2. Weight your grade book to accurately calculate your final grade
  3. Automatically sync grades to BlazerNet
  4. Drop the lowest grade(s) in Canvas
  5. Complete Canvas grade book to communicate correct grade to Banner

4. Canvas Modules

Course Description:

This introductory workshop will guide faculty through course building using Modules. We will discuss how instructors can use modules to direct and facilitate student learning. We will also discuss how to direct students to modules from the Home page using buttons.

  1. Organize course content in Modules to control flow of course
  2. Set requirements and prerequisites on modules
  3. Use module settings to ensure mastery of course activities

5. GoReact

Course Description:

The GoReact software allows faculty to setup online video feedback assignments inside a Canvas course. Students using this software can upload videos and receive timeline based feedback from an instructor and/or peers. This software also provides the option to create live events where the instructor/peer can provide feedback during the live presentation.

  2. Provide feedback to student submissions
  3. Grade student submissions

6. Kaltura and Video Best Practices

Course Description:

Inside Canvas the ability to record, upload, and share videos is provided by Kaltura. This software provides the option to record webcam presentations, screens, and audio. Previously recorded videos can also be uploaded and hosted via this software. Additional options include captioning, interactive video quizzing, and viewer analytics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Use Kaltura to create videos
  2. Embed Kaltura videos inside a Canvas course
  3. Apply additional features to videos including interactive quizzes and editing
  4. Identify best practices for recording desktop video recordings
  5. Use Kaltura to submit videos to DSS for captioning

7. Poll Everywhere

Course Description:

Poll Everywhere helps transform one-sided presentation into a two-way conversation. Using this web-based audience response systems provides presenters the ability to embed interactive activities directly into their presentation. The audience can respond to the activities on the web or via SMS texting. Participants in this session will learn about the types of polls offered, how to create an activity and how to manage and display poll responses. There will be interactive activities and you are invited to bring your mobile device to participate.

  2. Describe the process for creating and activating an activity
  3. Explain ways to respond to Poll Everywhere activities
  4. Discuss pedagogical strategies for using Poll Everywhere in the classroom

8. ProctorUv

Course Description:

Participants will learn about UAB's guidelines for utilizing ProctorU in online and on-ground courses. Facilitators will provide information for using ProctorU and share tutorials for students and instructors. This is a great opportunity for participants to learn about best practices for using ProctorU.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify uses of ProctorU in courses
  2. Set up ProctorU account, set up exams, and locate incident reports within Canvas
  3. Review the student experience with scheduling an exam, connecting to their proctor, and beginning a proctoring session with ProctorU in Canvas
  4. Locate support resources for instructors and students
  5. Discuss best practices in proctoring an online exam
  6. Locate UAB’s ProctorU guidelines on UAB eLearning’s website

9. Zoom – Virtual Classroom Tool

Points: 15,000
Duration: Two (2) hours

Course Description:

This introductory workshop will provide faculty and staff information on using Zoom both inside and out of the classroom. Zoom provides users the ability to seamlessly create video conferences and instantly record and add to Kaltura media space inside Canvas. We will discuss how to access your account, scheduling and hosting a meeting, archiving and recording and technical support.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify how to request a license and setup an account
  2. Schedule singe and recurring meetings using both Web and Canvas apps
  3. Recording meetings and how to properly archive and share them
