Foundation of Course Design: Learning Objectives, Alignment, and Course Development Process

Course Description

Understanding the components of quality online education is a critical first step toward successfully developing a quality online or hybrid course. Participants will be introduced to the eLearning course design process and begin the course design/redesign process by creating measurable learning objectives. In addition, participants will learn about the importance of aligning critical course components.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the components of the course design process.
  2. Use Bloom’s Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain to create or revise learning objectives that are specific and measurable.
  3. Define alignment.
  4. Evaluate a sample course plan for alignment among learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments.

Developing Assessments and Learning Activities for your Online Courses

Course Description

In this workshop, participants will continue to learn about the course design process and learn how to develop assessments and engaging learning activities that align with course and unit learning objectives.

Developing Instructional Materials for your Online Courses

Course Description

Understanding the components of quality online education is a critical first step toward successfully developing a quality online or hybrid course. In this course, participants learn how to select/create instructional materials that align with course and unit learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments. Participants will also learn about copyright and intellectual property issues that arise in creating and using instructional materials.

  1. Recall the definition of alignment.
  2. Use a course design plan to design instructional materials that align with the course and unit learning objectives.
  3. Recognize copyright issues in creating and using instructional materials in online or hybrid environments.

Tips for Successful Online Course Delivery, Communication, and Feedback

Course Description

This workshop covers the skills required for the successful delivery of online content. Participants will discuss faculty and students misconceptions around online teaching and learning and the challenges of online course delivery. Participants will learn about the impact of the following: good course planning, components of an online course syllabus, and the importance of building online communities for students’ success. The facilitators will share tips for giving effective feedback and increasing interaction and engagement in online courses. The workshop is a great opportunity for participants to learn about the various resources and support services available through UAB.
