Longtime ECE faculty members David Green and Gregg Vaughn, Ph.D., were recently honored at a reception at the UAB Alumni House. The two men have more than 70 years combined experience at UAB.

In this video, ECE students Lin Yi and Abdul Mohammed explain how they designed and built an artificial hand for the class "Applications of Embedded Processors," taught by Abi Yildirim, Ph.D. In this team project, students were tasked with designing and developing a hand using common "off-the-shelf" materials. For programming and driving the electronics, they used the Arduino (clone) board, which is available for less than $10. Mohammed and Lin, both part of the INTO UAB Program, used only $65 from their $100 budget to complete the project.

bpl logo2Teens Engineer Birmingham, a UAB School of Engineering outreach effort through the Birmingham Public Library, was selected as the recipient for the 2015 Community Impact Grant from the UAB Benevolent Fund. The program will receive a $50,000 grant from the Benevolent Fund, which will be used to expand a partnership with the BPL to provide STEM-based robotics programming at three BPL branches within walking distance of Phillips Academy, Woodlawn and Ramsay high schools.

UAB Joins NSF's Regional Innovation Ecosystem
