Dr. Stokely worked for Texas Instruments, Inc., in Dallas, Texas, for 13 years. His career in academe following the award of the Ph.D. degree includes 15 years with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and 3 years with the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington. He spent a total of 18 months on sabbatical leave to the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he did the principal design work on a medical instrument for producing quantitative images of brain blood flow in tomographic cross-section. He served for six years as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UAB. He has published over 150 articles in journals and conference proceedings, is a member of IEEE, the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers (AIMBE), and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). He has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, and he has served as a reviewer for numerous journals. He has also served on review panels for the NIH, the NSF, and the Whitaker Foundation. Dr. Stokely is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of AIMBE.

Research Interest

Ernest Stokely's research interests include imaging techniques for measuring physiological function, and the application of signal processing, image processing, and image understanding techniques to medical images.

Current Research

Past research funding includes grants from the NSF, the NIH, the Whitaker Foundation, and Cray Research.
