Peter attended Robert College, in Istanbul, Wesleyan University, and Cornell University, where he studied molecular energy transfer in gases, graduating in 1977 with a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. His work since graduation has been focused on the measurement and control of air pollutant emissions from stationary sources, including gas turbines, package boilers, fluidized bed combustors, industrial furnaces, flares, and electric utility boilers.

Before joining UAB, in 2002, Peter was a Principal Member of the Technical Staff in the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories, in Livermore, California. His work at Sandia included measurements and analysis of particulate matter emissions from engines and industrial furnaces and measurement of inorganic species in combustion products using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.

Peter received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship from the UAB Graduate School in 2010 and the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011. He is an Associate Member of the American Flame Research Committee of the International Flame Research Foundation and a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Physical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Combustion Institute, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and Society of Petroleum Engineers.
