Materials Camp

Students with hands covered in white goopy material. When: July 15-19, 2019
Who: High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors
Where: UAB campus in Birmingham, AL

You’ve heard of mechanical engineering, and civil engineering, and electrical engineering, and chemical engineering ... but did you know there are also materials engineers? Making things better, stronger, lighter, faster, safer, smarter—materials engineers shape the future!

The study of engineering materials combines the fundamental science of chemistry and physics (and sometimes biology) with the applied problem solving of engineering. People in the materials field study metals, ceramics, and plastics (including glass, composites, nanomaterials, and semiconductors) for everything from contact lenses to computer chips to crankshafts. By understanding how and why different materials bend, break, stretch, melt, corrode, or conduct electricity under different conditions, materials engineers can design materials that make engines more efficient, airplanes lighter, cell phone batteries longer lasting, and cancer-fighting drugs more effective.

If you’d like to learn more about how this exciting field, then apply for Materials Camp at UAB. At camp you will work with professors and students from the Materials Science and Engineering Department to learn, play, design, build, test, create and explore. You will also meet people working as materials engineers for local companies and learn about what kinds of jobs they do. Join us and find out what Materials Science and Engineering is all about.

Camp Details

Materials Camp will consist of interactive lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions, as well as a field trip to a local manufacturing facility and a multi-day engineering design project. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. Camp will end with a celebratory barbecue lunch for students, faculty, sponsors, and parents.

Who Should Attend

The Materials Camp is open to high school students who will be entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year in the fall. Students should be motivated learners who are interested in applied science and engineering design.

Location

Most of the camp will take place in or around the Business and Engineering Complex building on the campus of UAB. The street address is 1150 10th Ave. South in Birmingham. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from this location each day. Materials Camp is a non-residential program and housing is not available.

Cost

The cost of this program to students is $50. This is a competitive program; those students who are selected to attend will need to submit payment to secure their spot. Need-based scholarships are available.

Financial support also comes from the National Science Foundation (Grant DMR-1554856) and the ASM Materials Education Foundation, which funds Materials Camp for high school teachers and students across the country and internationally.
