American Foundry Society

The American Foundry Society (AFS) is an organization for students and professionals interested in the metalcasting industry. UAB has a very active student chapter of AFS, which receives significant support from the local professional AFS chapter. The UAB chapter participates in a variety of hands-on activities occur throughout the year, including Open Foundry Day, a regional student casting competition, and outreach to local schools through Foundry in a Box demonstrations.

How it Works for You

Student members are always welcome at the monthly Birmingham AFS chapter dinners. Additional scholarship, internship and employment networking opportunities are available to students through the Foundry Education Foundation and College Industry Conference (CIC), held annually in Chicago.


Alpha Sigma Mu

Alpha Sigma Mu

Alpha Sigma Mu is an international professional honor society dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the materials science and engineering field. Each spring, undergraduate and graduate students from the MSE department are inducted into the UAB chapter of ASMu.

How it Works for You

At the recommendation of the faculty, membership invitations are extended to MSE students with junior standing or above who are in the top 25% of their class based on GPA, and to graduate students in the top 50% by GPA or who show exceptional promise as a researcher. Among other activities, ASMu members provide tutoring services to underclassmen in the department.

Material Advantage

Material Advantage is the largest national professional society for students in the materials science and engineering field. It is an umbrella organization for four prominent professional societies:

  • ACerS - The American Ceramic Society
  • AIST - Association for Iron & Steel Technology
  • ASM International - The Materials Information Society
  • TMS - The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society

How it Works for You

The UAB chapter of Material Advantage works closely with the AFS student group to organize plant tours, speakers, outreach activities and social events. In addition, Material Advantage membership provides access to a variety of technical publications, scholarship opportunities, travel grants and conference activities. Recent chapter activities have included an undergraduate student speaking contest, students traveling to Washington D.C. for Congressional Visit Days, and competition in the Materials Bowl quiz tournament at the TMS Annual Meeting.

Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) UAB Chapters are professional member societies dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and education in plastics and composite material fields for our students.
