Vinoy Thomas Receives Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship

Vinoy Thomas, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, recently received the 2019 Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship. He was presented the award by UAB Graduate School Dean Lori McMahon, Ph.D., in a ceremony on April 2.

Thomas mentors a number of graduate students, directing their work as they contribute to his research into polymer composites, biomaterials and nanomaterials.

Doctoral Fellowships Available in Materials Science

Outstanding Students

A limited number of doctoral fellowships are available through the U.S. Department of Education for students in the Tri-Campus Ph.D. Program in Materials Science. Students who want to be considered for one of the fellowships need to submit an application to the Materials Science Ph.D. program for either Spring or Summer 2019.

Cynthia Barham, administrative associate in the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering, has worked at UAB for 18 years — 17 of those in the department she now calls home. During that time, she’s worked for four department chairs, including current Chair Brian Pillay, Ph.D., and she says that their commitment to making UAB a great workplace made it easy for her to thrive.
