Education:

  • B.S.Met.E., Metallurgical Engineering, Michigan Technological University 1983 (High Honor)
  • M.S. Met.E., Metallurgical Engineering, Michigan Technological University 1985
  • Ph.D., Metallurgical Engineering, Michigan Technological University 1988

I came to UAB in 1990 after a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Associateship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Metallurgy Division (1988-1990). I joined in 1990 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor (1996) and full professor (2011). I taught taught a wide range undergraduate and graduate courses and received the 1999 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching for School of Engineering and the 2013 Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching, which is the highest teaching award at UAB. I have served as the undergraduate (materials engineering) and graduate (materials science and materials engineering) program director. I have mentored/co-mentored 12 doctoral students, five of whom are university faculty. My research has involved composite materials, metals, and dental materials, with over 80 total publications.

Assessment and accreditation at department, school, and university level have been a major focus of my career. I was the primary author of four Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (EAC/ABET) self-studies (three in Materials Engineering and one in Mechanical Engineering) and been the primary university contact for one visit. I have served as a program evaluator for five EAC/ABET site visits and four as chair or co-chair.

As Associate Provost for Assessment and Accreditation, I am Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Liaison, including the Quality Enhancement Plan. Additional responsibilities include assessment and program improvement as well as academic and faculty issues in the provost’s office.

Research Interests

My current research focuses on ceramic materials for dental applications, including zirconia and porcelain. Topics include effects of roughness and roughing process on bond strength, correlation of materials strength to the strength of a model tooth system, phase transformations in the oral environment, and CAD/CAM processing.
