Proposals to support teaching innovation and group development of new approaches/techniques related to improving instruction and learning are being solicited. Most funded awards will focus on the theme Learning in a Team Environment. However, some awards may be made to for exceptional proposals not related to the theme. Awards range from $2000-$5000 based upon scope and the number of faculty involved. Multiple awards will be made based upon the quality of applications and availability of funds.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Principle investigator must be a full-time UAB employee and hold a faculty appointment.
  2. Completed proposal template with a clear statement of outcome to be evaluated.
  3. Award recipients must present their summary findings to a faculty audience within 18 months of notification of award.

Funds Available and Restrictions: The maximum award is $5,000 under this mechanism. The proposed budget will be evaluated for relevance and reasonableness. Funds cannot be used to cover investigator salary, pay for release time from teaching or service work, pay for a TA, pay for memberships to professional organizations, or for travel to conferences or workshops at which the awardee is not a presenter (travel for the purpose of dissemination is allowed, and will be considered on a case-by-case basis; proof of presentation may be required).

  2. The maximum 4 page proposal narrative. See details and "Tips for Success" within this document.
  3. Budget with justification (1 additional page)
  4. Maximum length of 5 pages for entire application (Project Narrative and Budget/Justification)
  5. Letters of support from the head proposer’s Chair or Head of their academic unit, and their Dean, stating that they will be given time to work on the proposal, and that they have the support of their Chair/Head and Dean to do this work.
  6. Principle investigator curriculum vitae
  7. Co-investigator curriculum vitaes (if appropriate)

Review and Scoring Criteria: Applications will be evaluated based on likelihood for success, potential impact on student learning or teaching effectiveness, innovation, and fit with the QEP theme of “Learning in a Team Environment.” Proposals must demonstrate the department or school/college has the technological resources to support the project, or that this support can be provided by the Center for Teaching and Learning. Evaluation of the budget for relevance and reasonableness will be a factor.

Submission Due Date: All components of the application are due no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, November 16th 2018.

Notice of Award Date: Funding decisions will be communicated to the PI on Friday, December 21st 2018 no later than 5:00 PM.

Anticipated First Date for Fund Availability: The earliest funds will become available is Monday, January 7th 2019, and must follow evidence of IRB approval.

Post-Award Requirements: Recipients of supplemental support to their CTL-QEP Teaching Innovation and Development grant will be required to submit a summary of the activities that took place as a result of funding this work. This will be at six months post-start, and again at the conclusion (12 months). Recipients will give a presentation as part of the CTL presentation series to disseminate their work. It is anticipated that work will be complete within 12 months following project start, although extensions may be granted with strong rationale.
