Admissions Requirements

The following items are required of all applicants:

  • Minimum of six months of research experience.
  • For international students, a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS, or 53 on the PTEA.  Scores must be no more than two years old at the time of application submission.
  • An online application including all components listed in the Application Checklist.

Note: GRE scores are no longer required for application, but scores can be provided voluntarily.  There are no courses or majors required for admission.  A master's degree is not required for admission.

Recommended for Admission

The following items are typical of most applicants, but not required:

  • Baccalaureate degree in the natural or physical sciences.
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Minimum combined verbal/quantitative GRE score of 300.

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed by the theme admissions committee as they become complete, so early applications are encouraged.  Applications are considered complete when all components listed in the Application Checklist have been received.  The most competitive applicants are invited to interview, and interviews take place in January and February.  Admission to the program is highly competitive and the number of positions is limited; therefore, not every qualified applicant can be offered an interview or a position.

Admissions committees meet the week following the interview event, and offers are made to top interviewees.  Initial offers will be made by mid‐April, with most offers being made well before that date.  Additional offers may be made should slots be available.  Applicants will receive an email when an admissions decision has been made.

Offers of admission will be based on a combination of factors, including (but not limited to):

  • Previous bench research experience
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement of research and career interests
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Undergraduate performance (both curriculum and GPA)
  • English proficiency scores (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, or PTEA)
  • GRE scores (if the candidate chooses to provide)
  • On-campus interview, at program expense (international applicants may be interviewed via phone or Skype)

Interview Dates

On-campus interviews for select applicants will take place on January 11-13 and February 15-17, 2018.  International applicants may be interviewed by phone or Skype.

Accept/Decline Deadline

April 15 is the final day for an applicant who has an offer of admission to accept or decline the offer.

MD/PhD Admissions

Students interested in the MD/PhD program should follow the application process on the UAB MD/PhD Program website.
