The INTO UAB Center supports UAB’s commitment to globalization. International students bring diverse perspectives, enriching the learning experience for all students and the campus community. The INTO UAB Center will increase the global diversity of our student body, increase globalization opportunities for domestic students and provide opportunities for faculty to expand international teaching, research and service activities.

In an effort to increase awareness of the INTO UAB Initiative, faculty, staff and students were invited to attend more than 18 forums held across campus during the 2015-2016 academic year. You may view the presentation here.

FAQs about INTO UAB:

Welcome to INTO UAB

When will we welcome the first students into the INTO UAB Center?

We look forward to welcoming students in August 2016. A small cohort of new Academic English students and continuing students from the former English Language Institute will enroll over the Summer 2016 term.

Will international students still be admitted directly to UAB degree programs?

Yes. International students who meet all admissions requirements will continue to be admitted directly to UAB degree programs.

What should I know about INTO UAB students?

There are no INTO UAB students. Students enrolling in Academic English and Pathway programs ARE UAB students. They receive the same benefits, access and amenities as domestic students. They will live on campus and will be integrated into the residence halls. They will take credit-bearing courses and attend classes with traditional students.

What are the currently proposed INTO UAB Programs?

The initial INTO UAB programs will include Academic English (English as a Second Language) and select Undergraduate and Graduate Pathway programs.
  • Academic English
This program helps non-native English speaking students prepare to use their English skills in university-level study. The rigorous curriculum uses a content- and task-based focus to strengthen the English language and cross-cultural communication skills of students, while also introducing them to UAB academic expectations. The program is designed to equip international students for academic success through the development of listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills.
  • Undergraduate Pathway
This program combines intensive English language study and academic skill development with academic course work. The Pathway program is uniquely designed for international students to continue the development of their English skills while completing first year course work that will count toward the completion of a four-year UAB bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduate Pathway
This pre-master’s program provides international students with intensive English language study and graduate academic skill development with credit bearing courses that directly lead to selected UAB graduate degree programs.

What are the benefits and outcomes for students of a Pathway program?

Pathway programs benefit many international students who wish to study at UAB but may not yet meet the requirements for direct admission due to language barriers. Pathway programs provide an alternative route to admission by allowing students to establish academic progression and success at UAB before gaining full admission as a degree-seeking student. Pathway students demonstrate academic ability in courses and, upon successful completion of the program, will be eligible to matriculate into a degree program.

What does this mean for our Alabama students?

Pursuing international student enrollments will not detract from our continued efforts to recruit in-state students. The admission of international students will not displace any qualified Alabama student.
