Welcome to UAB! We are glad you are here and excited about your contributions to academic and extracurricular life here in Birmingham. You are joining a diverse and ever-growing population of international students on campus representing over 80 countries.

The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is located in the beautiful new international center on the second floor of the Mervyn H. Sterne Library on the corner of 9th Avenue and 13th Street South. We are open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.

We offer a broad array of programs and support services designed to help alleviate many of the stressors of being an international student. Our staff is the best source of advice and information on topics such as maintaining student immigration status, online course enrollment, minimum hours requirements, on- and off-campus work authorization, internships, post-completion and STEM extension optional practical training (OPT) work authorization, applying for a Social Security card, obtaining an Alabama driver license, paying US income taxes on scholarships and graduate student assistantships, and many more. The Forms and Information Sheets found here contain the answers to many common questions.

If you need assistance regarding immigration issues or other areas of concern, please email or book an appointment with one of our knowledgeable immigration advisors. General questions can be directed to isss@uab.edu. Our office also provides notary service.

ISSS is here to help you handle the bureaucracy so that you can focus on what you came to the US to achieve. By seeking timely advice and paying attention to our weekly e-newsletter, the Globetrotter, you can stay informed of programs and information that will help you succeed academically and personally at UAB. We look forward to assisting you during OPT workshops and tax advising sessions and relaxing with you at our Friday Coffee Hours!
