J-1 visa students are eligible for Academic Training, which grants students up to 18 or 36 months of off-campus employment authorization related to their major.

Bachelor’s and Master’s level students can work legally off campus in a job related to their major for up to 18 months (or the total number of months you have been a J-1student). PhD level students are eligible for 36 months of off campus employment related to their major (or the total number of months you have been a J-1student).

Off-campus employment should supplement the coursework or research of the student’s major, and permission must be granted by the student’s academic advisor and the ISSS office.

Students must complete at least one academic semester and be offered a job related to their field of study.

Students must receive approval from your J-1 Responsible Officer (RO) before beginning Academic Training. Students with DS-2019s issued by UAB will contact the ISSS office located on the 2nd Floor of Sterne Library for Academic Training endorsement.

Students are required to have a written job offer and complete a training plan form (found in the link below) with your academic advisor or principal investigator (PI). The job offer letter and training plan must include the following:
  • A description of the training program listing goals and objectives
  • A description of how the training relates to your field of study, and how it is integral to your academic program
  • The name and address of the academic training location
  • The name, phone number, and email address of the supervisor

Students are eligible to begin employment either before or after graduating. Post-graduation employment must begin within 30 days after the program end date on your DS-2019

Students who wish to pursue Academic Training while enrolled full-time during the fall or spring semester are limited to 20 work hours or less per week. Full-time Academic Training (20 hours or more per week) is permissible during vacation periods and post-graduation.
