Students on OPT with an eligible STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) can apply for a 24 month STEM OPT extension. Students should contact ISSS within 100 days of the end of their current OPT period to request a I-983 training plan form. The student must have a job related to their STEM major. That job must also be a paid position and the student is required to work more than 20 hours per week. The student should fill out the form with their supervisor and their human resource office (students cannot complete the form with a representative from a staffing agency). As soon as our office receives the I-983, we will send an I-20 requesting a 24 month OPT extension within 3-5 business days.

UAB’s individual schools determine the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code for each degree offered. ISSS cannot change or alter the CIP code designated for the degree you choose. At UAB, 55 degrees qualify for the two-year STEM OPT extension based on their inclusion in the STEM Designated Degree Program List:
