In order for a doctoral candidate to participate in the Doctoral Hooding and Commencement Ceremony, the candidate MUST submit the Doctoral Hooding & Commencement Attendance Form to the Graduate School no later than November 14, 2017. Please read all information below if you intend to participate in the ceremony. 

Fall 2017 Ceremony: Saturday, December 16th at 12:00 p.m.


The Doctoral Hooding and Commencement Ceremony is for those candidates receiving the PhD, DrPH, EdD, DSc and DNP degrees. Doctoral candidates,  dissertation advisors, mentors, families, and friends are invited to attend the ceremony to be held in the Jemison Concert Hall at the Alys Stephens Center. The ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16th. This commencement ceremony is for doctoral candidates; do not attend the ceremony at Bartow Arena on the same day.

REGARDING YOUR FACULTY CHAIR. Each candidate should ask his or her dissertation committee chair or a committee member to participate in the hooding ceremony. If no one from your committee is available to serve in this capacity, the person whom you ask to assist in the hooding must be a faculty member in your program. You will need to identify the faculty member who will hood you to confirm his/her availability. Faculty should inform the Graduate School of their plans to attend and to provide the names of any doctoral candidates they intend to hood.

REGALIA. Commencement recognizes the academic achievements of UAB graduates and is considered a formal academic ceremony that should be viewed as such in dress and demeanor. The recommended dress for doctoral graduates is comfortable business attire. Full regalia (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) is required for this ceremony. 

Purchasing: If you wish to purchase your regalia, please contact Greer Hallmark at sm536@bncollege.comfor pricing. The deadline to order full custom regalia or individual pieces for purchase is November 23, 2017.

Renting: If candidates and faculty would prefer to rent regalia, the deadline to order is November 14, 2017. After this deadline, a $25 rush processing fee will be assessed. Links to doctoral and faculty regalia order forms are located at https://www.uab.edu/graduate/completing-degree. You may return the completed form in person to The UAB Bookstore located in the Hill Student Center or email it to Greer Hallmark at sm536@bncollege.com. If you borrow regalia, you still must fill out the commencement attendance form.

Rental doctoral regalia will be available at Barnes & Noble @ UAB (Hill Student Center, 205-996-2665) starting December 7, 2017.  If you choose shipping* for your rental regalia, it will arrive at your home between December 8-9, 2017.   Store hours and complete contact information are available on the UAB Bookstore website.  Custom purchased regalia will be directly shipped to the address you choose.
*Shipping for the continental United States will be provided for $7.50.

Online and distance learning students, who do not reside in the Birmingham area, should contact Greer Hallmark sm536@bncollege.com at Barnes & Noble @ UAB to obtain information on regalia shipping. Please allow one business week for replying to email messages.

GUEST TICKETS WILL NOT BE REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Please arrange for your guests to be at the Alys Stephens Center by 11:15 a.m. so that they may be seated before the academic procession begins. Seating will be available for families and friends. No one will be seated prior to 11:15 a.m.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS. Upon request, special seating or assistance during the ceremony will be provided for those with disabilities. Please contact gradschool@uab.edu  to make these arrangements.

CEREMONY PROCEDURES. Candidates and Faculty will report to the Alys Stephens Center no later than 11:00 a.m. on the day of the hooding ceremony. Proceed to Odess Theatre where you will check in at the Graduate School table, to pick up the name card that you will use in the ceremony, check your regalia with Bookstore representatives, fold your hood, receive instructions regarding the ceremony, and line up with your faculty mentor for the procession.

Your guests may be seated starting at 11:15 a.m. Promptly at 12:00 p.m., the procession will begin with the entry of the stage party. You will enter in procession, followed by your faculty mentor, and will be seated in the first rows of the concert hall. You, your faculty mentor, and any other candidates he or she is hooding will be seated together.

The ceremony will close with the recession of all members of the stage party, the doctoral graduates, and their faculty mentors. 

PHOTOGRAPHS. Picture taking is permitted, but only from audience seats or the outer aisles of the theatre; photographers should not impair the view of other spectators. There will be a professional photographer taking a picture of each graduate as she or he is hooded.

ARRIVAL AND PARKING. On street parking is available around the ASC. Upper and lower circular driveways may be accessed as drop-off points. The Alys Stephens Center is located at 1200 10th Avenue South.

I-65 Northbound
Exit onto 8th Avenue South (University Boulevard). Turn right on 13th Street, then right again on 10th Avenue South. The Alys Stephens Center will be on your right.

I-65 Southbound
Exit onto 4th Avenue South. Turn right on 13th Street, continue to 10th Avenue South and turn right. The Alys Stephens Center will be on your right.

Highway 280 (Red Mountain Expressway)
Exit onto 8th Avenue South (University Boulevard) and turn right. Travel to 13th Street South and turn left. Turn right on 10th Avenue South, and the Alys Stephens Center will be on your right.
