To my fellow graduate student peers and friends,

By now we are all aware of the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the profound effect it is having on our personal and work lives. We have all had to make drastic social adjustments and lifestyle changes to ensure our individual safety and the safety of those around us. As we venture into another week that may feel daunting and uncertain, I encourage you to be brave, to be smart, and to stay informed. The onset of fear and panic tends to be preceded by misinformation or a lack thereof; therefore, it is our duty as members of the UAB community to stand united and to stay educated on the rapidly evolving university guidance that is helping to ensure our safety during this trying time.  Please rest assured that there are many individuals working around the clock and in collaboration with local and state officials to construct the best interim policies to ensure your safety and wellbeing. You are not in this alone, and we as a community must band together to extend support to one another as we navigate these circumstances.

UAB’s administration, faculty, staff, and the Graduate Student Government (GSG) are all here to support you and address your questions and concerns to the best of our ability. For the most current information, please visit https://www.uab.edu/coronavirus and utilize the UAB Updates and Closures as well as the Students tabs. Student Affairs, USGA, and the GSG are in the process of developing a COVID-19 Student Relief Fund to offset some of the unexpected costs associated with student displacement due to the virus. This fund is still in the process of being developed, so please check our website at https://www.uab.edu/gsg/ for any updates concerning the launch of the fund. In the meantime, I implore you to be diligent in your everyday safety measures, such as frequent handwashing and the usage of hand sanitizer, social distancing, and working from home whenever possible. These practices help to “flatten the curve” of the number of newly infected individuals drastically and thus help mitigate the spread of the virus.

In closing, I want to thank you for your continued patience. This is a rapidly evolving situation and we are all doing our best to respond quickly and efficiently to circumstances that are unprecedented for many of us. Please know that as your GSG President my top priority is to advocate for your needs and concerns, and I know that in this time of uncertainty you need someone to fill that role now more than ever. I am here to answer the call and make sure your needs are being met. Please never hesitate to email, text, or call me to receive clarification on any issue. Remember that we are in this together and together we are Blazer Strong.
