Unemployment Compensation

Employees furloughed due to the COVID-19 health crisis are eligible for unemployment benefits and UAB is doing everything possible to assist with filing the claim to expedite the process. If you have questions, please contact UAB HR at humanresources@uab.edu or 205-934-5321.

If you have been furloughed and you would like UAB to file an unemployment claim on your behalf, you must complete the steps below:

Complete the Unemployment Employee Consent Form

The Unemployment Employee Consent Form authorizes UAB to submit information to the Alabama Department of Labor on your behalf. UAB will continue to file weekly unemployment claims on your behalf during the furlough period.
Click here to submit the Unemployment Employee Consent Form.

Verify your mailing address

During the furlough it is very important that UAB has your current contact information, including your mailing address and phone number. To verify and/or change your information, log in to "Oracle HR & Finance" from the UAB Admin Systems webpage, select the "UAB Self Service Applications" folder and navigate to "Personal Information." Please note — changes may take 24 hours to update.

On May 19, designate your preferred payment method for receiving unemployment benefits

The Department of Labor no longer issues paper unemployment compensation checks. Employees may choose direct deposit to a checking or savings account OR the AL Vantage Prepaid Benefits Card. You must call the Alabama Department of Labor on May 19, 2020 at 800-499-2035 and use the automated system to select one of these payment methods. Claims with no payment method selected via this process will be considered incomplete, and will not be processed. You cannot designate your payment method before May 19, 2020.
Click here for an information handout on selecting a payment method.

The Alabama Department of Labor has advised that direct deposit is the most convenient and dependable way to receive your benefits. There is no fee for direct deposit. To set up direct deposit, please have your bank routing number and account number ready when you call to complete your claim.
See the ADOL Direct Deposit Fact Sheet for additional information on direct deposit for unemployment benefits.

The Department of Labor has indicated that employees will be paid unemployment benefits more quickly on a weekly basis when employers file on their behalf. If you authorize UAB to file a claim on your behalf, you should NOT file a separate claim with the ADOL because it may delay your receipt of benefits. Employees who do not wish to have UAB file an unemployment claim on their behalf can file directly via:

  • Telephone by calling 1-866-2 FILE UC (1-866-234-5382) between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday, during the first week in which they do not work.
  • Online at the Alabama Department of Labor website: labor.alabama.gov
