Can I send encrypted email to users outside of UAB?

Yes. Anyone can receive and view encrypted email sent from UAB.

Can I send encrypted emails containing restricted data such as Social Security number and credit card numbers?

No. Restricted data is still not permitted in email.

Is the custom Encryption button available for all clients?

No. It is currently only available for Office 365 users using Outlook 2016 for Windows.

How can I send encrypted email without using the custom Encryption button?

Any campus email users can send encrypted email by type [encrypt] in the subject line of a message.

What do I do if my email doesn’t work in Outlook on my desktop or laptop?

  • Make sure you are using Office 2016.
  • Activate “cached mode.” Learn how to do that here. (Note: Office 2016 for Mac has cached mode enabled by default.)
  • Confirm that your user name is in the format BlazerID@uab.edu.

What do I do if my email doesn’t work on my iPhone or iPad?

First, make sure your user name is in BlazerID@uab.edu format in your email client. Your mobile device may automatically connect to the new service.

If it does not, please follow these instructions:

  • Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts and select your current UAB email account
  • Scroll to the bottom and click "Delete Account"
  • Go to your device's Settings, scroll down to Mail, tap Accounts > Add Account
  • Select Exchange.
  • Enter your BlazerID email address, password and a description of your account. Then tap Next.
  • If you are prompted to enter server settings, enter the following and tap Next.
Email: Your full email address (BlazerID@uab.edu)
                Server: outlook.office365.com
Username: Your full email address (BlazerID@uab.edu)
Pasword: Email account password.

  • Outlook may request certain permissions. To agree, tap Yes. Then choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and tap Save.

What do I do if my email doesn’t work on my Android device?

  • First, make sure your user name is in BlazerID@uab.edu format in your email client. Your mobile device may automatically connect to the new service.
  • If it does not, please follow these instructions:
  • Open the mail app.
  • Tap "More" > "Settings" > "UAB email account"
  • Tap "Remove."
  • Go to Settings > "Add account" > "Exchange"
  • Enter your full email address, BlazerID@uab.edu. Tap "Next."
  • Enter your password and tap "Next"
  • If prompted for sync options, select the options you want, such as calendar and contacts. Tap "Next" to complete setup.
Note: Android devices vary in how they are configured but the process should be very similar to the steps listed above.

I added a new profile on my mobile device and a weird message popped up. What does that mean?

Adding a new profile will result in being prompted to accept a mobile device policy. This policy makes no changes to your settings but will prevent random popups in the future.Learn more here.

My email is stuck in my outbox. What should I do?

If you experience this issue, we recommend you rebuild your Outlook profile. Learn how to do that here.
If you suspect outgoing mail to be stuck in the outbox and you are using a Mac, Outlook 2016 for Mac hides the outbox by default. You enable it by going to the Outlook menu and selecting "Work Offline." This will cause the outbox to appear.

One the outbox is available, you can move the mail to a folder, preventing any mail to be lost if your mail client is rebuilt.

Why is my Outlook slow?

Most slowness problems in Outlook can be fixed by ensuring you are in Outlook in “cached mode.” Learn how to do that here. If you continue to experience slowness problems, please contact AskIT at 205-996-5555 or askit@uab.edu and provide details regarding when the slowness occurs and any error message that is displayed. Once everyone has been migrated to Office 365, additional system changes will be implemented to address some forms of slowness in Outlook.

How do I connect to the web version of employee email now?

Visit outlook.office.com for web email.

I can’t manage my distribution groups. What should I do?

This is a known issue, but the solution cannot be implemented until all mailboxes are migrated to Office 365. Distribution groups that are migrated must be managed either by UAB IT or by the department IT administrator. Learn more here.

Why am I getting “quarantine” messages?

The Office 365 spam digest looks different than the notifications you previously received and come from the address quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com. Learn more here.

How do I change the message order on my iPhone or iPad?

  1. Go to Settings, scroll down and select Mail
  2. Under the Threading section
  3. Enable “Organize by Thread” to group related messages from a conversation.
  4. Enable “Most Recent Message on Top” to display the most recent message in an email conversation at the top.
  5. Enable “Complete Threads” to show all of a thread’s conversations in chronological order, regardless of which mailbox they’re in.

Why do I get an error when logging out of Office 365?

When logging out of Office 365 users will receive an error message. We are currently working to rectify this issue. Until that time it will be necessary to close your browser in order to complete the log out process. Unless you are using a public or shared computer it is recommended at this time to just close your browser tab when exiting Office 365. You will be logged out automatically after a period of inactivity.

Why is my Mac prompting me to allow a change to Server settings?

Following the migration, Outlook 2016 for Mac users will receive a pop-up notification about redirecting the Autodiscover server to Office365. Please review the steps below rectify this issue.
  1. When the popup is presented, please select the “always allow” checkbox (or you will see this notification every time you launch Outlook) and then click allow.
  2. If you have multiple accounts or access shared resources (either other users’ calendars or shared resource accounts), you will see one of these pop-ups for every message.
  3. Should you have selected Deny, these notifications can be reset in Preferences -> Notifications -> Reset All Alerts. This will cause the pop-up notifications to be shown again to allow proper configuration.

Why do I see an error message when I log out of Office 365 online?

When logging out of Office 365 online, you will receive an error message. It will be necessary to close your browser to complete the log out process. Unless you are using a public or shared computer, UAB IT recommends at this time that you just close your browser tab when exiting Office 365 online. Your mailbox is retained for 1 year after leaving the University. After your mailbox has been removed, you’ll be able to change your email address forwarding in BlazerID Central.

Can I forward my email from my Office 365 mailbox prior to my mailbox being removed?

Yes. You can do so by following this KB article.

Can I forward my email to Gmail, Outlook.com, etc.?

Yes. You can forward your @uab.edu email address to any internet mail provider.

Can I still send as ‘BlazerID@uab.edu’?

No. You will only be able to receive mail sent to your @uab.edu email address.
