Remote working technology toolkit

From time to time, you may need a remote office to help you get work done for UAB. UAB IT offers tools to help empower success, no matter where you need to work.

Check Your Email

Log into Office 365 to check your email from anywhere. You can use the Outlook app on mobile or log into mail.uab.edu. You can also access online Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Instant Message

Use Microsoft Teams to chat with University employees, faculty and students.

Video Conference

  • Use Zoom video conferencing for teleconferencing with people inside and outside of UAB.
  • Use Teams for teleconferencing with anyone inside UAB.

Share or Store Files

UAB has cloud storage options — including Box and OneDrive — that are appropriate for public and sensitive data. Learn more about what to store in the cloud and where.

Connect Securely

  • If you are logging in to certain UAB systems such as Secure UABFile, Insite, Report Viewer or Optidoc, you may need to use a VPN, or a virtual private network.
  • If you are using public WiFi, you should use VPN.
  • If you are only accessing email and other systems that do not require VPN, you can simply use a secure WiFi network.

Connect to Your Desktop

If you need to access your desktop computer remotely, you can request it through the IT Service Portal if you are a Desktop Services customer or from your department IT professional.

Use 2-factor

It's a good idea to make sure you have more than one device linked to Duo, in case you don't have one when you are working remotely.

Stay Secure

When you are working remotely, keep your devices and your data secure. In particular, keep in mind that phishing attacks don't take a break when you're off campus! Check out our resources here. When you are using Zoom, avoid security issues with these tips.

Use Your Phone

Answer your work phone with the Jabber app; update your voicemail to direct callers to an alternate phone number; or forward your calls from your work phone. ONLY forward your phone if you need to for critical business purposes.

Set Your Homepage

With most of the UAB community working remotely, connection is more important than ever. myUAB is a single hub where you can access the employee news, applications, links and information you need to help run your day. Check out these steps to personalize your dashboard and get the most out of my.uab.edu.

Automate your paper processes

With remote work under way, the physical distance lends itself to automating traditional paper processes. UAB IT can guide you through determining the best tools and workflows for your needs. Fill out the request form here.
