Meltwater

Meltwater is an interactive online social media surveillance tool. This platform allows researchers to monitor public social media posts for keywords, sentiment, geography, and several other aspects to provide insights on how the general public may feel about any given issue. Meltwater extracts data from social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Youtube, and various blogs/news sites. Researchers can download data from searches using Meltwater for further analysis. For example, if we download tweets, then we can get information on Twitter content, posting time, geolocation, user ID, and user profile etc.

One recent example of such research can be found here: https://www.uab.edu/reporter/research/discoveries-innovations/item/9111-chinavirus-study-explores-spread-of-covid-19-related-stigma-on-twitter

Dr. Ruoyan Sun (Health Care Organization and Policy) will provide a webinar on how to use Meltwater for research purposes. We will post the recording on this page, so keep an eye out for an update!
