Research Interests:

The behavioral aspects of health with a specific interest in promoting the health and wellness of African American women

Research Description:

Dr. Martin’s research interests include health disparities in chronic diseases. She has conducted various intervention studies including studies to increase physical activity in hypertensive African American women and a study to improve medication adherence (to antihypertensives) in rural African Americans. She is Co-Director of the Community Liaison Core of the Resource Center for Minority Aging Research. In this capacity she will develop and evaluate strategies to partner with communities and engage older African Americans in health related research. Dr. Martin also has a number of cancer-related studies including a study to evaluate treatment preferences among cancer survivors, a study to assess the caregiving experience of cancer caregivers, and a study to test the effectiveness of a nationally developed cancer resource on meeting the informational needs and impacting the quality of life of patients with cancer.
