In a large academic institution such as ours, many people have major debt from loans taken out to pay for higher education. To provide financial relief, and to encourage employment in the public sector, the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 established the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). The program allows borrowers who make 120 qualifying monthly payments to have the remainder of their balance forgiven. Until last October, few were able to access the program due to stringent qualification requirements.

Well Be We lost a colleague last weekend. Caroline Marshall, MD, Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology passed away on Saturday. She was a kind person with a gentle presence, an outstanding physician and scientist. We join her family and friends in mourning her departure from us.

Well Be Despite the increasing frequency of news reports on Omicron, I was only slightly apprehensive about visiting family in Utah this Christmas. The thoughts of a snowy reunion with holly jolly good times with cousins and kiddos was in my sights, and I reassured myself that I totally had the hang of this infection prevention thing. My husband and I were both vaxxed, both boosted, and we masked everywhere we went in public. We knew how to play it safe.

The holiday season is mostly behind us, and we are settling back into the work routine…except for the large number of people who have encountered our new nemesis, Omicron.
