My friend is much younger and more fit than I am, so as we set out on our run I sarcastically quipped that I was going to “whip him into shape.” This phrase has been in common usage in settings like this one for most of my life, and I have said it many times. But on the way home after our run it struck me that what I had said was actually both domineering and violent.

Their treks in search of scenic vistas have produced record crowds at national parks and escalating charges for gasoline. But you don’t necessarily need to travel to enjoy some of the wonders of the world.
