The American Society of Nephrology announced the appointment of Michael Allon, MD (Professor, Nephrology) as the first Editor-in-Chief of Kidney360, ASN’s new online open access journal that will launch in January 2020. Kudos on this prestigious appointment, Dr. Allon!

Stephen Stuart, MD (PGY-3) presented a poster on "Delayed Post-Hypoxic Leukoencephalopathy" at the National Society of General Internal Medicine meeting. The case describes a combined MRI and clinical chronological course diagnosis for a patient after an anoxic brain injury resulting from a code event. Keep up the great work, Dr. Stuart!

Vera Bittner, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received the 2019 W. Virgil Brown Distinguished Achievement Award and Lectureship from the National Lipid Association at its Annual Scientific Sessions. This award and lectureship program was established to recognize an exemplary clinician in the field of lipidology who has made outstanding contributions in the diagnosis and treatment of lipid disorders. Congrats, Dr. Bittner!

IM Resident Rich Godby (PGY-2) has first-authored a paper on immunotherapy in older adults with cancer, with Grant Williams, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) as senior author. The review points to the scarcity of data for seniors—who comprise the majority of the cancer population worldwide—that is needed to determine the best immunological approaches for cancer treatment.  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11912-019-0806-2

The Department bids a fond farewell to the outgoing Chief Medical Residents for 2018-2019. James Barrios, MD, begins fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at UAB in July. KeAndrea Titer, MD, will stay at UAB to serve as faculty in General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine. Jeremey Walker, MD, will start an Infectious Diseases fellowship at UAB in July. And Joanna Zurko, MD, will begin a Hematology and Oncology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. We deeply appreciate their contribution to our training program for the past academic year and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Kirk Russ, MD (Assistant Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) will join UAB in August after completing his GI fellowship here at UAB. He will be treating patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease at The Kirklin Clinic. Dr. Russ earned his medical degree at University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he graduated AOA. He completed his residency and chief medical residency here at UAB. We are delighted to have him join the faculty!
