UAB House Calls Helps Patients Meet End-of-Life Goals
Thanks to the UAB House Calls program, many frail, older patients who once bounced in and out of the emergency room or the hospital for their care are experiencing life changing results. By employing an interdisciplinary team—a physician, nurse practitioner, medical assistant, case manager and social worker—to visit in the home, this vulnerable population can better cope with serious and chronic illness. What's more, thanks to frank and honest discussions about their goals of care, many reach the end of their lives at home surrounded by family, rather than in the hospital. House Calls Medical Director Marianthe Grammas, MD (Assistant Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) is encouraged by her recent findings, which demonstrate that these patients are both living and dying with greater hope, comfort, and security.

bone marrow harvest that has produced a beautiful and an unexpected friendship. Hayden Hatfield Ryals signed up to be a marrow donor and ended up not only being a perfect match, but also saving the life of Skye Savren-McCormick, who was suffering from junvenile myelomonocytic leukemia at the time. Two years later, the pair is still close, and Skye was the flower girl in Hayden’s wedding. Great job to Dr. Saad and his team!

Six DOM Programs Earn “Top 50” Rank in US News & World Report Best Hospitals List
US News & World Report continues to rank Cardiology, Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Pulmonary, and Rheumatology among the Top 50 programs in the U.S. Rheumatology remains #10, Nephrology and Pulmonary moved up further in the Top 20, and Cardiology moved into the Top 20. These improvements are driven in part by falling 30-day mortality for our patients. Congratulations to each of our Divisions and to all our faculty, staff, residents, and fellows! A program is highly ranked only when each patient receives care from a high-functioning team.
