Biography

Dr. Dag Shapshak joined the UAB faculty full-time in July of 2014. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida in 1995 earning a bachelors degree in physics and applied mathematics. He then graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 1999 with a medical doctorate. Dr. Shapshak completed a residency in Emergency Medicine in 2003 at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans and was board certified in Emergency Medicine the following year. After practicing in the community of Saint Louis, Missouri for 2 years, Dr. Shapshak trained in undersea and hyperbaric medicine in San Francisco, California becoming board certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine in 2006.

Academically, Dr. Shapshak joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 2007 as an Assistant Professor. He served as the director of the DHEC funded Early Intervention Program at MUSC aimed at screening for HIV in the emergency department and linking patients to specialty care. Dr. Shapshak also served as the assistant medicine director of the Ashley River Tower emergency department at MUSC and has served on several departmental and hospital committees at MUSC.

Dr. Shapshak joined the faculty at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in July of 2014. In addition to attending in the emergency department, Dr. Shapshak practices wound care and hyperbaric medicine at the Russell clinic and serves as its co-medical director.

Dr. Shapshak’s clinical and research interests include emergency medicine, undersea and hyperbaric medicine and wound healing. He has authored textbook chapters pertaining to hyperbaric medicine; wound care and emergency medicine as well as co-authored published guidelines on the care of arterial ulcer insufficiency by the Wound Healing Society. He is an invited speaker on the topics of hyperbaric medicine and wound healing. He has served as a member of national organizations including the UHMS, AAEM, ACEP, SAEM and WHS.
