University Emergency Department

The UAB Emergency Departments (UED and HED) are staffed by a combination of our 42 emergency physicians, 30 Emergency Medicine Residents and 9 Advanced Practice Providers. All providers are credentialed to work at both of our facilities. The clinical operations side the Department of Emergency Medicine is constantly changing to adapt to our health system environment. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our patient experience, care for patients more efficiently and effectively, and provide the emergency resources that our community needs.

Highlands Emergency Department

Highlands Emergency Department (HED) is a 19 bed emergency department located 11 blocks from the UED, on the opposite perimeter of the UAB Campus. The HED underwent a significant expansion and renovation in 2014 to ensure that our department has the capacity to care for our growing patient population. The Highlands ED cares for ~35,000 patient encounters per year, with an admission rate of ~20%. While the HED shares many patients in common with the UED, it tends to have a bit lower acuity and more of a community ED feel (compared to the Academic Medical Center feel of the UED).

Gardendale Emergency Department

Gardendale Emergency Department (GED) is a 23-bed free-standing emergency department that opened in 2019. It provides the same high quality state-of-the-art emergency services as the other two EDs, and the department is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians.
