Emergency Critical Care is an emerging field within the realm of Emergency Medicine, more so since there is now a clear pathway to board certification. The Office of Emergency Critical Care is one of the newer offices within the Department of Emergency Medicine at UAB. Dr. Adam Kessler, Acting Director, Emergency Critical Care, is boarded in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. His interests include resuscitation and the use of advanced resuscitation strategies (i.e. E-CPR), as well as Critical Care Education for Emergency Medicine Residents.

There are several exciting projects in development within the Office of Emergency Critical Care. Most notably is an ED-ICU, which will accomplish a number of goals. First it will allow ICU level care to be delivered from time of admission from the ED instead of upon transfer to the ICU. Second, this will allow for increased exposure of critically ill patients to the Emergency Medicine Residents. This will allow the residents to more fully understand the natural history and trajectory of the patients they care for in the Emergency Department. Third, this will help deal with issues related to boarding of ICU patients in the ED while ICU beds are being prepared.

There are also plans in the near future to create an ED ECMO program that will focus on Extracorporeal CPR. This will make UAB one of a small number of institutions in the country to offer this service.

The Office of Emergency Critical Care is excited for the future and all it has to offer our patients at UAB.
