Regulatory Coordinator

Karen Brown joined the Department of Emergency Medicine in January of 2014. In her current position, Ms. Brown oversees the regulatory activities for the department’s research program. She assists faculty and research staff in the development and submission of IRB applications, protocol amendments, and progress reports to the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) at UAB and other local hospitals who receive patients treated in our studies. She maintains current files with these institutions, and serves as a liaison between our research faculty and the IRBs.

Ms. Brown holds a BA in Philosophy and a Master of Science in Health Administration, both from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. She first came to UAB in 1992, and has worked in regulatory affairs since 2002. Ms. Brown previously served as division administrator for a large HIV/AIDS research and service program located in Zambia, based at UAB. In addition to her employment at UAB, she has worked as a freelance writer since 2013 for multiple colleges and academic medical centers, as well as for national and multinational companies such as Abbott and GE Healthcare.
