Kimberly Smith, Ph.D.

smith 2The Department of Family and Community Medicine welcomed Kimberly A. Smith, Ph.D., in August 2020. As the new director of the Alabama Practice-Based Research Network (APBRN), Dr. Smith will lead the efforts of a consortium of more than 160 primary care providers across the state who aim to find practical solutions to problems faced by both patients and providers.

Dr. Smith will focus on research experiences and milestones as outlined by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant awarded to the department in the summer of 2020. The grant’s goal is to recruit and train more physicians for rural and urban underserved areas of the state. “The APBRN helps facilitate collaborations and provides logistical support for research carried out in community-based clinical settings. We want to help improve healthcare delivery and outcomes to better serve our patients,” said Dr. Smith. One initiative of the APBRN is to build a COVID-positive patient database to track patients’ symptoms and provide care.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine recognized that patients who were not sick enough to be hospitalized still needed to be cared for and have access to resources. "In creating the registry, we are able to further collect information on patient recovery, health disparities, and treatments in order to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. By partnering with practices and providers statewide to conduct research, we will be able to find practical solutions to some of the real-world challenges being faced today,” said Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith joins UAB from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned her Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Research, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment. She holds a master’s degree in Educational Research Studies, also from the University of Southern Mississippi; a master’s in Human Performance with a concentration in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama; and a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Health Promotion from the University of Montevallo.
