Nationally-ranked as a Best Hospital for Gastroenterology and GI Surgery services by U.S. News & World Report, our division is rich with physicians of diverse subspecialty focuses, from pancreatitis to Crohn’s disease and IBD to hepatic encephalopathy and liver disease, allowing students, residents and fellows to gain immense, comprehensive knowledge of all clinical aspects of GI and Hepatology. Collaboration with radiology, pathology, and surgery serve to increase our breadth of education to an even higher level. We consider education as an essential tool to enhance the future of healthcare.

All fellowship programs, Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Transplant Hepatology, and Advanced Endoscopy, are designed to develop future clinicians dedicated to excellence in all areas of their practice.

Weekly interdepartmental case conferences enrich knowledge and enhance collaboration of fellows and faculty alike across the university. Education goes beyond UAB Hospital, Kirklin Clinic and UAB Highlands; our faculty, fellows and residents also work with patients at Birmingham Veterans’ Administration Medical Center which allows additional learning experiences.

All learners are valuable in our division and all faculty have ample opportunities for continuous faculty development. Opportunities for research involvement are made available via the division’s dedicated clinical research group, allowing trainees to learn through research while increasing medical knowledge
