Each year millions of people are diagnosed with gastrointestinal disorders. These range in complexity and severity with each individual, but all require the treatment and expertise of trained and experienced gastroenterologists. The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is meeting patients needs by providing competent and professional care to individuals suffering from all gastrointestinal and liver related diseases.
The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinical Services
We operate inpatient and consultative services at University Hospital and Birmingham VA Medical Center. Outpatient clinics are held at The Kirklin Clinic, UAB Highlands, and Birmingham VA Medical Center.
Annual outpatient visits to The Kirklin Clinic average over 10,000 with over 5,000 procedures performed each year. Patients are seen by attending faculty members with the assistance of fellows.
At University Hospital, the inpatient service maintains a daily census of approximately 24 patients in the Basil I. Hirschowitz Endoscopic Center for Excellence located in Jefferson Tower. And, approximately 80 patients are evaluated monthly through the consultation service. Each service is staffed by an attending faculty member and fellows who rotate monthly. Residents rotate through both ward and consultation services.
At UAB, we are able to use the most current diagnostic and treatment procedures when treating gastroenterological and liver related ailments. We also utilize the services of our expert physicians in the UAB Liver Center, the Pancreaticobiliary Center, and the EUS program to accurately diagnose and treat these disorders.
